Cost of Setting UP a Server

What is the cost of setting up a Saravana Bhavan franchise? - Quora

I realize this is an older question and the OP might have found his server by now, but just so that it helps others, here is my answer:

Unless you’re a corporate with multiple internet connections and a ton of UPS, generators and 24x7 power supply available, you do not want to be setting up your own server. The costs of running your own little DC is astronomical. This is why the concept of ‘co-location’ has existed for over a decade now.

In a co-location setup, you get to put your server in a datacenter that already has all the backend infrastructure in terms of connectivity, power and cooling available. You pay a charge for the time you decide to leave your server running in one of their racks. However, there are some challenges with this setup as well in terms of security.

Fast forward to 2017 and almost everyone is pulling out of co-location or even shutting down whole Datacenters and moving to public cloud providers. The largest one being AWS. Here you can instantly spin up your own servers without the headache of managing physical servers and the infrastructure associated with it.

So, if anyone is looking to have their own server, they for all reasonable purposes should consider setting up a server on the cloud.

If Linux is the base OS for the above mentioned config of 50, 000 users and database able to hold 1 million users, you are looking at at least 3–4 web servers having 8cores each with 32+GB of RAM with 2 other DB servers with similar config. Each server can cost an estimated minimum of around Rs.17, 000/Month as of today. Maintenance/Managed cost would differ from provider to provider and the level of SLA you agree with them. However, what type of system you need is not just dependent on the number of users it will support or how many records you can store, there are a lot of other factors that come into play.
