Creating Target Links

Target links are convenient, timesaving aspects to add to your web page. Target links allow instant connections to different sections within your page, as well as to other pages in your collection. With Dreamweaver, target links are very easy to create. In the following sections, this document will offer instructions and hints for creating and maintaining target links.

Creating target links with Dreamweaver is a two-step process: setting up an anchor and linking to that anchor.

Setting an Anchor

The first step to creating a target link is setting an anchor at the place you would like to link to.

  1. Place the cursor before the section you want to link to

  2. From the Insert menu, select Named Anchor…
    OR
    From the Insert pane, in the Common tab, click NAMED ANCHOR Named Anchor button
    The Named Anchor dialog box appears.

  3. In the Anchor Name text box, type a name for the anchor
    HINT: Assigning meaningful names to your anchors will make page maintenance easier. Spaces are not recommended in anchor names.

  4. Click OK
    An anchor Anchor appears next to your cursor.

Creating the Link

The second step of creating target links is setting a link from one place in your page to the spot you anchored. When using the dialog box, you can browse to locate the anchor name. When using the Properties pane, you must type the anchor name exactly.

  1. Click where the link will appear

  2. From the Insert menu, select Hyperlink
    OR
    From the Insert pane, in the Common tab, click HYPERLINK Hyperlink button

  3. In the Text text box, type the text to be linked

  4. From the Link pull-down list, select an anchor in the current document

  5. Click OK

As you modify your page, your anchors may change. To keep your web page clean, you should remove any old, unused anchors.

  1. Select the anchor symbol

  2. Press [Delete]
    NOTE: Be sure to remove any links which referred to this anchor.
