Back To Basics - SEO Stratagies We Forgot

Listed below are some basic tips and tricks that will
help you gain a better position in the search engines.

1. Use Alt-Tags

Search engines seem to really like alt-tags that are used
on images as well as text links, etc. Be sure you use
keyword specific text that describes what the image is
about.

Put the alt-tag inside of the image name tag

2. Keyword Rich Title Tags

All search engines use your title tag to aid people is
understanding what your site is about, but many use it to
actually gain a majority of the info they need to help
position your site. Be sure that your title tag is
descriptive, keyword rich and relevant to what your
business is.

Bad Title: Welcome To Joe Lunch Bucket.com
Good Title: Limited Edition, Highly Collectable Children's
Lunch Buckets.

3. Too Much Description

Don't assume that more is better. In fact, many websites
have entirely too long of a description. Search engines
like to glean a little information from the title, keywords
and description. Your site may be passed over if your
description is too long.

4. Keywords

Keywords are important to any site, but remember; use
specific, relevant keywords. Don't assume that by using a
generic word like "optimization" the search engines will
automatically know you are talking about "search engine
optimization". They may mistake it for optimizing the
performance of your car.

Be specific - use the keyword suggestion tool at Overture
to help you find keyword phrases. You will have a better
shot of getting customers if you use phrases that the
normal person searches with.

5. Don't Use Frames

Although frames can be a useful addition to your website,
it can really wreak havoc with your position in the search
engines. If you can avoid using frames, we would highly
suggest doing so. It is not impossible to optimize your
site, but it is not easy.

6. Don't Over Submit

Be sure that you don't spam the search engines in your
attempt to submit to them. You only need to submit once per
month and you only need to submit your main page. Don't
bother submitting pages such as "about us", "contact us",
etc. The search egines know how to spider a site, let them
do it. These will be picked up if the engines want them.

7. Don't fall prey to the companies offering thousands of
visitors to your site. It is a joke and it is overloading
your server. There is not actually people visiting your
site, only servers sending requests to your site. It
appears legitimate, but it isn't.

8. Don't get caught up in companies offering thousands of
links for only a few dollars each month. First off, the
thousands of links that you are gaining are from a "Link
Farm" - very bad - stay away. This can really cause some
problems with the search engines. If you desire a good
reciprocal link campaign, pay a professional. Remember,
very few serious partnerships will form out of any links
that are gathered from a link farm.
